Moving around skylights are not allowed without protection. This can either be in the form of collective protection or the use of fall protection
We are seeing more and more people becoming aware that movement around skylights and domes without protection is a problem.
There are two known solutions: either a guardrail is installed around all skylights, or fall protection anchors are established so that you can move between skylights while wearing a fall protection harness. Installing freestanding guardrails is not really a viable solution, so fall protection is the method most people use. The challenge here is the limitation of the user’s freedom of movement and the fact that there are often multiple users on the roof at the same time, and not all fall protection systems take this into account.
A third solution is skylight grids, where an approved grid is mounted directly on the skylight dome. This solution is approved according to the applicable requirements for collective protection and has the added advantage that no annual inspection is required, unlike fall protection systems.
